Hello families! My name is Stephanie Lance. Let me share a little bit about myself: I completed a Multiple Subject Credential and a Masters of Education (M.Ed) from UCSD in 2014. I also have additional experience with math teaching and learning through the EMEC (Elementary Mathematics Emphasis Certificate) Program at UCSD. I joined the HTH community in 2014, and I feel honored to be a part of such a inspiring team of teaching and learning professionals. This year, I am continuing to work as a teacher leader in our work to implement the NGSS science standards. I am continually excited and challenged by my work here at High Tech Elementary North County. I look forward to starting the 2017/18 school year!
Before I became a classroom teacher...
I received a B.A. in Environmental Studies from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 2010. Afterwards, I came to California to pursue outdoor and environmental education with Naturalists at Large (NAL). I taught natural science through group building and outdoor activities such as snorkeling, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, camping, and climbing. After working at NAL for a few years, I moved to San Diego to work for Seacamp, a marine science education camp for elementary, middle, and high school students. After my experiences in outdoor education, I decided to pursue a career in education at UCSD.
I am passionate about the environment, especially natural science and marine science. I enjoy finding new ways to be environmentally conscious and aware of my impact on the environment, especially the ocean. I am passionate about marine conservation and teaching about marine science. I love exciting students about the wonders of the ocean through hands-on, experiential instruction. There is something so powerful about seeing the diversity of our world right before your eyes. Learning about marine biology as a child really encouraged me to pursue environmental science as an adult. Because of my experiences as a student, I learned of the values of the natural world, and I aim to instill those same values in my own teaching.
In my free time I love to explore the city of San Diego. Even after living here for six years, I am still inspired by it's beauty and bounty! I also love to hike, bike, run, swim, compete in triathlons, camp, paint, draw, scuba dive, snorkel, do yoga, surf, take pictures, travel, and spend time with friends and family.
